Street lighting using general electricity supply is both costly and is pretty much limited to being only in areas where power poles exist. there are a few solar powered light structures in the area (Wattle Park) with night time safety an issue, and general street lighting requiring access to the power grid, how about a greater emphasis on solar street lighting, bus shelters and public transport wayfinding etc, could be powered by roof mounted or top mounted PV panels & mercury lamps to LED
Having a zillion little devices that each have their own PV panel and battery ends up being costly as well. The maintenance ends up being complex and fiddly. Ask Telstra what it's like to be responsible for its poles, wires, towers, pits and manholes... However, this idea makes a lot of sense for areas that don't have access to the electricity grid.
Provided they last the whole night, great idea.
